In our daily lives we encounter a lot of things. Some of them are beyond our control while others can be comprehended and hence controlled. There are times of uncertainty when even our conscience tends to fail us. However, it is such times of uncertainty that prompt us to seek God in order to get proper direction. God is an ever present help in time of need.
In fact, He cares so much for those He loves to the extent that He gives warning when there's impending danger. When we are faced with tough times, when we are about to make a mistake or we simply need God's direction, He is able to provide. But how exactly can we understand God's way of communicating to us? The following are some signs that can be helpful in helping you know that God is telling you to avoid something:
1. If that thing goes against God's word avoid it
The word of God remains the basic standard through which we can understand the mind of God as well as know His ways. Therefore, anything contrary to God's word is worth avoiding. For example, if it outrighly disobeys the word of God or if the action you're taking eventually causes you to compromise. God would not allow you to do something that is against His word.
2. God speaks to you through dreams
You may have encountered dreams at some point in life when you were faced with a major decision to make. Sometimes you may be in a dilemma but God finally reveals to you His will through a dream. In the Bible, Job 33:14-15 states this fact clearly, of how God speaks to man through dreams and even warns us through dreams. Pay attention to your dreams. Another instance is that of Pilate's wife who was disturbed in her dream and she advised Pilate to be careful how he handled Jesus during the trial (Matthew 27:19). Others who received warnings through dreams include Joseph when Herod wanted to kill Jesus (Matthew 2:13-15), King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4).
3. You lose your inner peace
There are times when you may have already made a decision or you are just about to make a decision but you feel within you that something is not right. Your conscience tells you that there could be a problem but you can't quite figure out where or how. When your lose your inner peace, you tend to be unsettled or you hesitate before doing something. This could possibly be a warning that whatever you're about to do could lead to disaster.
4. You get warnings from other people
Jesus Christ warned Peter of impending danger. He also gave a warning concerning the person who wanted to betray him (Judas Iscariot) - Luke 22:31-32; Luke 22:21-22.
It may seem like a coincidence when you are pondering over an issue then someone just makes a statement that causes you to change your mind. You may also share whatever is disturbing you with someone else and they advice you accordingly or warn you in advance. People can be a reliable source of advice or warning. Some of these people include, your parents, close relatives, friends and colleagues or your mentors and pastors.
5. God speaks to you through his voice
Isaiah 30:21 says, "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it." The voice of God is the voice of the Spirit of God who speaks to us and guides us. Whenever you hear that voice subject it to the truth in God's word because there are many voices you may hear. The voice of God will advice you to take action that is justified by God's word.
