"The Deceased Will Be Buried At Night" Family Of Man Who Committed Suicide In Kakamega Reveals


Traditions and customs are regarded as important aspects among the African communities. Remember a tradition is a belief or behaviour passed down within a group with significance with origins in the past.

Traditions can persist and evolve for thousand years. According to traditions and customs of the Luyhia community, anybody who commits suicide is supposed to be buried at night.

The family of Stephen Barasa has revealed that they would bury him according to the Luyha traditions. According to report shared by the family, the customs stipulates that the body of the deceased should buried at night and the tree on which he hanged himself should be cut down and burned into ashes and disposes of in a river.

Stephen Harass was found dead inside the maize plantation, his body was found hanging from a tree. He comes from Mkakawai village, Malawa constituency in Kakamega County. Neighbors and the family believe that Stephen committed suicide.

One of them, Simbuline Barasa, said that he discovered his body on his way to fetch water. According to report from the family, despite taking his life he had not been involved in a conflict with anyone. Therefore the family don't understand why he killed himself.
