From the creation accounts, God created the world in six days and climaxed his sixth day by creating human beings.
On the seventh day, God rested, He blessed, sanctified and made the day Holy. ( Gen. 2: 1-3)
From the Bible, we meet Sabbath being mentioned in the ten commandments and listed on the 4th.
In a paraphrase is says Remember the Sabbath day to make it Holy, six days you are to work but on the seventh day you are to rest, you and all your household, including your male or female servant and even the cattle at your home. Even a visitor at your place should rest on that day. Since God blessed and made it Holy during creation. (Exodus 20: 8 -11).
The same commandment is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:12-14 and God reminds them that they should rest to remember redemption from slavery.
From the two books, Sabbath observance reminds people of God's wonderful creation and God's marvelous acts of redemption.
The day was used for worship and holy congregations in both the old and new testament as we read from the Bible.
Initially, the whole world celebrated the Sabbath on the Seventh day of the week which actually is Saturday as can be read in the bible, from the calendars and from early records of counting days.
The bible even indicates that Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week meaning He died on Friday, Rested in the tomb on the Sabbath and Rose on Sunday.
Now the question comes, what happened? How come many Christians across the globe started celebrating Sunday as the Sabbath?
Here is the answer. God did NOT Change the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday but Man did.
According to the Catholic Catechism, the Catholic writings agree that the early Catholic believers and the Catholic Church changed Sabbath observance from Saturday to Sunday.
This can be seen from the extract below as obtained from the Catechism.
