Do not be afraid—I will save you. I have called you by name—you are mine. When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you. When you pass through the fire, you will not be burned; the hard trials that come will not hurt you. For I am the Lord your God (Isaiah 43:1-3).
Do not be afraid—I am with you! I am your God—let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you (Isaiah 41:10).
Love your enemies," Jesus says in today's Gospel (Mt. 5). How difficult this is--one of the most difficult of Jesus's commands to his followers. And how often it is observed only in the breach, especially online.
If only Catholics could love and respect Catholics with whom they disagreed. Because part of love is treating others with dignity, charity, and respect.
My model in this is always St. John Paul II, who forgave his would-be assassin (Mehmet Ali Ağca, pictured here) much as Christ forgave his executioners from the Cross.
