The Only ODM MP in Trans Nzoia, Will He Survive the Kenya Onslaught in the County?

Political temperatures in Kenya are rapidly rising as rivals scramble to outdo each other ahead of the much hyped 2022 General election scheduled for Tuesday 9th August this year.

During the last General elections held on 8th August 2017, Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Party managed to win 1 of 5 constituencies in Trans-Nzoia County. Through Caleb Luyai Amisi, ODM captured the Saboti Parliamentary seat for the first time in the county.

Amisi won the elections beating his closest rival Mr Jonas Kuko of Jubilee. He garnered 19,935 votes against Kuko’s 18,653 votes. Kuko had also contested for the parliamentary Saboti seat in 2013 elections on United Republic Party (URP) ticket, but also lost to Wafula Lazaro of then New Ford Kenya by a margin of 266 votes.

In this year's polls, the youthful anf energetic legislator is seeking to defend his seat once again using Orange Democratic Movement party. He will be facing formidable challenge from candidates of the newly formed Kenya Kwanza Alliance of UDA, ANC and Ford Kenya that has a strong grip in the county. In a bid to protect their political base and turf, Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford-Kenya counterpart Hon Moses Wetangula signed a political agreement with Deputy President William Samoei Ruto on 23rd January at the Bomas of Kenya. The political alliance seeks at consolidating the 5 major counties of Western under their grip.

These counties include Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga and Busia. This will greatly affect Hon Amisi from defending his seat on ODM and Azimio ticket.

In the Saboti Parliamentary race Amisi will be battling with Ford Kenya's Joseph Pepela, UDA's John Mengwa, Jonas Kuko and DAP Kenya Candidates Micheal Mbito and Lazaro Wafula.

Amis holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi where he graduated in 2010. He also studied at the famous Starehe Centre in Nairobi from 2001 to 2004 and Sabatia Primary school in Vihiga County from 1992 to 2000.
