Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Fred Matiang'i has defended the changes in the DP Ruto security team terming them as appropriate and constitutional.
Today, the vocal CS revealed that the second in command has a security team consisting of 257 officers, well training in protecting the Deputy President.
Matiangi's admission has, however, brought forth mixed reactions with Ruto's political camp despising Matiangi's move. DP Ruto Communication secretary David Mugonyi has also shown his displeasure towards the development saying that the CS is abusing his office. He further mentioned that Matiangi offered up inaccurate information while speaking today in parliament.
This mixed reaction has prompted sources to reveal how former vice presidents were guarded. Daniel Arap Moi during his stint as a deputy to Mzee Jomo Kenyatta had a security team consisting of 34 officers. Mwai Kibaki had 26, George Saitoti had 30, Musalia Mudavadi 22, Kijana Wamalwa 22, Moody Awuori 22, Kalonzo Musyoka 26 and Raila Odinga had 57 while he served as a prime minister.
This revelation has raised eyebrows at the large difference between Ruto's security team to that of the former Vice President.
