Military Photos of Africa's Top 5 SuperPower Nations

Global Firepower agency based in the United States finalized the ranking of the Military in Africa. The agency utilizes 50 individual factors, e.g., landmass, military might, financial stability, available manpower, to determine a given nation's Power index score.

The unique method of analysis applied by the agency allows smaller technologically advanced countries to compete with large but less-developed nations.


The power index representing the most advanced powerful nation is 0.0000, which is realistically unattainable. The agency says that the smaller the power index, the more powerful the mentioned country is in terms of fighting capability. Meanwhile, nuclear capability is not used for analysis.

1. Egypt

Egypt was ranked number one in Africa, and 9 out of 138 nations considered for analysis. The country's power index is 0.1872 and with an active personnel 920,000 against a population of 99,413,317.

The country has 1054 aircraft, out of which 215 are fighter jets, 88 dedicated for attack, 59 for transport, and 294 helicopters. The country also has 4295 Tanks, 11,700 Armored Vehicles, 1,139 self-propelled Artillery, two aircraft carriers, and eight submarines. Egypt's Total Defence budget is 11,200,000,000 USD

2. Algeria

Algeria is the 3rd strongest country in Africa and ranked 28th globally with the power index of 0.4659. The country has 280,000 military personnel against a population of 41,657,488.

Algeria has total aircraft of 551, of which 103 are fighter jets, 22 dedicated for attack, and 257 being helicopters. The country also has 880 tanks, 7,361 armored vehicles, and 316 rocket projectors. The annual military budget is 13,000,000,000 USD.

3. South Africa

South Africa is ranked 5th most powerful in Africa and 29th globally, with a power index of 0.4985. The country has 81,300 military personnel against a population of 55,380,210. With a total aircraft of 226, the country has 17 fighter jets, 88 planes for training, 23 for transport, 7 for special missions, and 91 Helicopters.

South Africa has 195 tanks, 2000 armored vehicles, 50 Rocket projectors, 72 Towed Artillery, and three submarines. The country's military budget is 4,278,000,000 USD.

4. Nigeria

Nigeria is ranked 4th Most powerful nation in Africa and 42nd in the world. The country has total military personnel of 120,000 against their populAtion of 203,452,505.

Nigeria has 129 total aircraft out of which 8 are fighter jets, 13 dedicated for attack, 47 trainers, 5 for special missions, and 44 as helicopters. The country also has 253 tankers, 1,789 armored vehicles, 25 self-propelled artillery, and 36 rocket projectors. The county's annual military budget is 2,155,000,000 USD.

5. Angola

The country closes the top 5 list of the most powerful nations in Africa. Angola is ranked 56th in the world, with a power index of 0.8379.

The country has a total manpower of 107,000 military personnel. Angola also has 25195 total aircraft, out of which 72 are fighter jets, 18 dedicated for attack, 30 for transport, 47 for training, and 126 helicopters.

The country has 379 tanks, 595 armored Vehicles, 28 self-propelled artillery, and 115 rocket projectors. Angola's annual military budget is 7,000,000,000 USD.
