Mass Exodus From Raila's Camp As Fresh Setback Emerges

Dr. William Ruto, Kenya's deputy president, has been travelling the country in preparation for a presidential run in 2022. The main hustler, however, is reported to be strategically displacing Orange Democratic Movement party leader in his own backyard, according to recent sources.

Even the Nyanza area, which is viewed as Ruto's major opponent Raila Odinga's turf, knows that the DP would win next year, according to one of his regional allies, Kuria West MP Mathias Robi.

As a result, he claims, there is a rush in the region as leaders and voters strive to join the DP's camp in order to avoid missing out on a position in the next administration, which he believes would be created by the Second In Command.

"The next government will be formed by UDA and Ruto at the helm. Most voters and leaders in Nyanza are aware of this and they are struggling to find a space with us which we have given with an open hand,” he told The Star on Friday.

He went on to say that after securing a new group of leaders for the DP, including former Awendo MP Jared Kopiyo, they have set out to do even more to ensure that Ruto's support in the region doubles.

According to the lawmaker, they are collaborating with smaller regional parties to reach this goal, and they also plan to recruit over 200,000 people to the UDA party, the DP's electoral vehicle for next year.

He asserted that the people have decided to look elsewhere after a series of disappointments, and that the decision to embrace Ruto and leave Raila is due to the former Premier's presidential losses.

"Kopiyo's defection to our camp has given us momentum. We are also working closely with other like-minded smaller parties in Nyanza. We are sure we will turn the table on Raila and ODM in the region because voters are tired of backing a candidate who always loses,” he added.
