It was mayhem at Kericho County Assembly on Friday this week after the Members of the County Assembly deferred on who should be the majority leader. They threw fists and chairs at each other bringing the house business to a standstill. The Speaker could hardly contain the enraged MCAs.
President William Ruto while attending a thanksgiving Sunday service at Green stadium in Bomet County, spoke about the incident sharply disparaging the MCAs and the house leadership for their thoughtless conduct.
The president lost his cool and angrily scolded the leaders for fighting over seats instead of focusing on delivering to the electorate.
"Kericho MCAs, Wacheni Upuzi. Some leaders here are still fighting for positions instead of delivering on their mandate. Shame on you for going to the Assembly to fight. It has reached a point where we should have leaders who are planning for the wellbeing of Kenyans, not their own selfish needs," Ruto furiously said.
Now, the Kericho County Assembly Speaker has been summoned by the UDA party Disciplinary Committee to explain why the fracas ensued under his watch. The party notes that the Speaker failed in his role to organize members and lead them in selecting suitable leaders. In the process, UDA's reputation was injured.
"Accordingly, and under the provisions of Article 29 (IV) (V) (VI) and (VII) of the Constitution of UDA, you are hereby summoned to appear before the Disciplinary Committee on January 20, 2023, at 9 AM at Hustler Plaza, Board Room for the hearing of the complaint against you," went a section of the letter as seen by the Star.
Ruto is usually considered a no-nonsense leader unlike his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta who normally sat back and chose not to involve himself in certain matters.
