Removing Degree Requirement For Governors Is Bad News

The High Court recently scrapped of the degree requirement for Governors and Deputy Governors. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission had in the previous two elections required Governor aspirants to have degrees.

Justice Antony Mrima in a landmark ruling said that the degree requirement contravened article 180(2) of the Constitution which says the qualifications of a Governor are the same as that of a Member of County Assembly. Because of this it was found unconstituional.

This ruling will take effect in the next General Election. This means that a number of Governors in the future may not have degrees.

However, I think that this would scale back on the gains made in devolution. This is because devolution is as good as those who implement it. A Governor cannot head professionals when he or she is not a professional.

Most County posts have educational qualifications for one to be employed. Therefore, why should the Governor seat not have educational qualifications.

Why should we have tertiary institutions if we cannot appreciate them. We should embrace education and embrace it. This should start at the top with our leaders.
