Deputy President William Ruto's strong opposition against leaders from Mt Kenya forming their own political parties has sparked a huge divide among his allies from the region. It's believed Ruto wants all leaders from central who want to work with him to dump their parties and join the UDA party.
However, central region leaders are not taking this kindly as questions arise on to why the DP is forming alliances with parties from other regions except Mt Kenya. The fact that Ruto is willing to form an alliance with Migori gover Okoth Obado PDP party and Isaac Ruto's CCM has only raised eyebrows from Mt Kenya leaders and even residents.
Mt Kenya party leaders do not seem willing to swallow the humble pie and agree to Ruto's terms. NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua recently claimed that they fought hard for multiparty democracy and will not be coerced to leaving their parties for one party since they know the consequences.
If the DP continues with his opposition againast Mt Kenya parties, he risks loosing his control in the area. In the Juja and Kiambaa by-elections where Ruto's UDA dominated, one cannot assume the influence and contributions of leaders such as Moses Kuria whom he is 'fighting'.
It would therefore be a huge loss for UDA if such great leaders from the region withdrew their support as he is only guaranteed of some part of the central region and not the whole of it from the look of things.
His other only stronghold is the rift Valley region and I do not think that the DP is willing to gamble away his influence in the vote rich Mt Kenya. He therefore should find a way to accommodate the requirements and demands of the central region leaders if he is to garner a meaningful percentage of votes from the area come 2022.
