The County Government of Meru through Meru County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board and the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government through the office of Meru County Commissioner have today launched the Fight Against Illicit Brews and Counterfeit Goods exercise in Meru, which was officially commissioned in Nairobi by Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i last week and will be carried out in all the 47 counties.
Board CEO Paul Mwaki represented Governor Kiraitu Murungi, while the County Commissioner Mr. Karuku Ngumo represented CS Matiang’i at the function which was held at Nkubu town, Nkuene in South Imenti and will be carried out in all the sub counties.
During the 30- day crackdown drive, multi agency teams comprising officials from the County Government, NACADA, KEBS, KRA, Police and other agencies will inspect and enforce compliance of regulations involving manufacturing, stocking, packaging and sale/distribution of alcoholic products and food substances to ensure they conform to health and legal guidelines for safety of both the consumers and dealers.
County Commissioner, Mr. Ngumo issued the guidelines and protocols that will be followed during the exercise, warning stringent measures have been instituted to curb criminalities such as collusion between officials and business owners to compromise and undermine the exercise through corrupt dealings.
On his part, CEO Mwaki reiterated that the exercise is in good faith meant to ensure a comfortable and safe business environment for both consumers and dealers.
He warned political players in the County against politicizing the exercise, saying that the collaborative effort between the National and County Governments is aimed at achieving Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s vision of Making Meru Great, by ensuring business owners carry out safe, legal and acceptable businesses, while the consumers who are the people of Meru are protected against harm and danger of consuming poisonous and illegal products.
