Politician Refuses to Retire And Hints at Running For Senate Seat in 2022

(Raila and Ojaamong)

According to the constitution of Kenya, Governors are not supposed to run for the position once they serve two terms of 5 years each.

Busia county governor Sospeter Ojaamong has hinted that he intends to run for senate in 2022, after his second term in office expires.

Constitutionally, Mr Ojaamong can run for any elective seat in 2022 except that of governor. However, most political observers will opine that his intentions of trying to cling in active politics are suspicious.

Second term governors were behind a push to reintroduce regional tier seats under the BBI, but their plot was dismissed after a section of Kenyans took to social media to oppose such a move, claiming BBI is meant to create seats for politicians.

Most of second term governors are reported to be eyeing different political seats in the upcoming election, all the way from the presidency to Member of Parliament.
