Raila Odinga, who was appointed as the AU’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development in 2018, Last week, he received his termination letter from the Chairperson, Moussa Faki, and he didn't hesitate to sign in.
Because the secret is coming out, that he is the one who has been helping the group integrate funds.
According to the report released by the top ranking member of President William Ruto’s government, opposition leader Raila Odinga’s African Union role that ended this week could have cost the Kenyan taxpayer at least KSh 2 billion.
Though Mr. Odinga rejected the claim, the minority leader of the National Assembly, Mr. Kimani Ichung'wa, who was the House’s Budget and Appropriations Committee chairman when the post was created before he was kicked out, said Kenyan taxpayers had been footing the bills for Mr. Odinga’s AU role in his two offices in Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
"The Kenyan taxpayers have been paying for his salary allowances, travel, office, and perks," Mr Kimani added.
On the other side, Raila's spokesperson, Denis Onyango, insisted that Raila has been just using his money to fund the African Union's development, both at his office in Kenya and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
While According to the Auditor General's report tabled, it shows that in June of the year 2021, Kenya paid Ksh 4.9 billion in subscriptions to the African Union and other international organisations. The same year, Ksh 217 million and Ksh 655 million were also sent to the AU group to facilitate Mr. Odinga's role.
Though the final report has not yet arrived from former National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani to clear the air about whether it's true or not,
What we have in the back of our minds is that Raila Odinga, who is fighting for the economy of Kenya, has indeed eased the budget for funding the group, whether he is the one paying or the country as a whole. Now that money used to fund the AU group can be used in another project.
