Why 2022 General Election Should be Postponed

KANU secretary general Nick Salat, a close ally of Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has said the country can't go into next year's general election before a referendum is held.

Upon learning about the tight time constraints facing BBI, Salat has said the general election should be postponed to create enough time for a referendum.

"The country cannot afford to go to the next election before underlying issues that lead to violence during each election cycle are resolved...,” Mr Salat said.

"...If postponing the election to allow implementation of the BBI reforms will resolve the perennial election chaos in the country, “so be it”, he added.

Salat said this in the wake of reports that a section of lawmakers are plotting to extend the life of parliament beyond August 2022, to create sometime for pending issues to be dealt with first.

However, Suna east Mp Junet Mohammed has dismissed those reports saying they are "diversionary" claims being peddled by allies of Deputy president William Ruto.

According to Junet, there is no such plot from where he seats.
