William Ruto: From Small 'Chicken Seller' to Kenya's 5th President

Today, August 15, 2022, Deputy President William Samoei Ruto was declared as president-elect by Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

For Ruto, the journey culminating in today’s coronation as Kenya's fifth president has not been a walk in the park. The journey has been in the making for over 20 years.

Unlike the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, DP Ruto came from a humble beginning. Born in 1966 in Kamagut village, Uasin Gishu County, DP Ruto had to hustle his way up like most of Kenyans.

From Ruto's own admission, he had to sell chicken along the busy Webuye-Kitale junction to supplement his parents' meager earnings. He did this while still in school. It was because of his humble beginnings selling chicken in Kamagut that many of his supporters have nicknamed him the 'Chief Hustler'.

DP Ruto's rise from a chicken seller to State House will surely be an inspiration to many Kenyans who identify themselves as 'hustlers'.
