Tanzanian Opposition Leader Speaks After Returning From Exile

Tanzania's opposition leader Freeman Mbowe has returned to the country after fleeing the country after last year's elections.

Freeman Mbowe is the chairman of CHADEMA and is one of the party leaders who fled the country after the late President of Tanzania the late John Magufuli was declared a winner.

Mbowe is among the opposition leaders who fled to foreign countries for fear of their security while in Tanzania. Another is former Presidential candidate Tundu Antiphas Mughwai Lissu who fled to Belgium and Godbless Lema who fled to Kenya.

Addressing reporters in Dar es Salaam, Mbowe said he was thankful to God for the gift of his life. Seemingly referring to former President the late John Magufuli, Mbowe said some people were alive when he last spoke in Tanzania but today they are no more.

"Thank God for the gift of our lives. There are many who were alive the last time I spoke to the nation in January this year but are no longer alive" said Mbowe.

Mbowe said he failed to return to Tanzania after the death of President Magufuli, but his Chadema party was involved in all funeral plans.

"We have lost our President Dr. Magufuli, I am sorry I did not return to the country to attend the funeral" he said.

Mbowe said he has visited many countries including Africa and outside Africa.

He says at this time people have been asking his whereabouts and even some have predicted his death.

"A lot has happened, they ask where Mbowe is and some even predicts dead, but I'm fine, I'm not sick" he said.

Mbowe added that there is a lot to be remembered about the late Magufuli. Good and bad.

"The late Magufuli will be remembered for many bad and good things, the unique qualities of Magufuli, one is the courage to make difficult decisions, he had the talent I call talent, the second he believed and emphasized hard work this is a good reputation" added Freeman Mbowe.
