Ruto Marks Mt Kenya Leaders Working With Raila, What he Plans to do to Them Leaks

Deputy President William Ruto's camp has embarked on a plan to see to it that the leaders from Mt Kenya who are currently dancing to ODM leader Raila Odinga's tune are replaced next year, it has emerged.

A good number of area leaders allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta, including governors, have been coalescing around the former Premier, a 2022 presidential aspirant and Ruto's opponent in the race.

Ruto's plan now, The Star has established, is to sweep their region through his new UDA and see to it that only those loyal to him, majority being new aspirants, take over their positions for working with his rival.

But there are also seasoned politicians working with him and interested in these seats, the likes of Ferdinand Waititu who wants to make a comeback against his former deputy James Nyoro.

"I will reclaim my governor's seat on the UDA party and through God’s mercies, I know the people of Kiambu will give me another chance," Waititu, who was impeached, has said.

Ruto is not new to reports of trying to make his allies secure positions and has been repeatedly accused of bungling Jubilee Party's nominations in 2017 and handing over the tickets to those allied to him.

He has been accused of doing this to ensure that seasoned Mt Kenya politicians allied to the President and who could stand in his way in 2022 are pushed out of the way, with the likes of Jubilee Vice Chair David Murathe confirming this.

The DP has since fallen out with the President, who has reneged on his earlier promise to endorse him. Rather, he now seems keen on having Raila as his successor, which has been criticized by the DP.

The development also comes at a time when Raila, initially seen as a hard sell in Mt Kenya, seems to be making forays there, with the support of the leaders Ruto is reportedly scheming to be kicked out.

Uhuru is reported to have dispatched people who helped him win like Murathe and Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju, as well as those who funded him and his 2013 and 2017 campaigns like the Mt Kenya tycoons, to help Raila against Ruto.
