The Judicial Service Commission had been conducting interviews in search of a Chief Justice to replace retired Chief Justice David Maraga. The interviews ended last Friday on 23rd April 2021. Since the interviews started, Kenyans had mixed reactions about who they thought should become the next head of the Judiciary.
Dennis Itumbi, who is Chief Strategist and a close ally to Deputy President William Ruto has hinted that Martha Koome might become the next chief justice. Itumbi wrote, "To vacate High Court orders to stop JSC from announcing a shortlist of the CJ and vetting of Supreme court judges or Not? The Court of Appeal announces the decision at 11 am tomorrow. Is Martha Koome the next CJ?" This may be one of the smart moves for the "deep state" to revenge on Justice Philomena Mwilu who is the acting Chief Justice since two women can't be Chief Justice and other Deputy Chief Justice thus this would force an internal reconstitution to relegate Mwilu be a judge of the Supreme court.
During the interviews, Kenyans noted that some of the members in the panel that conducted the interviews were reading from different scripts and it was evident that either Mr.Fredrick Ngatia or Lady Justice Martha Koome was the most preferred candidate by the system or the "deep state".Following keenly through the interview, Lady Justice Koome wasn't handled "roughly" like the other candidates where Professor Olive Mugenda and Macharia Njeru who was the LSK representative seemed to favor Lady Justice Koome.
Do you agree with Itumbi's suggestion that Justice Koome might become the first woman Chief Justice? Kindly leave a comment on the same.
