Kenya's debt currently stands at over nine trillion Kenyan shillings.During President Uhuru Kenyatta's tenure,that's when the debt really increased having been left at a very low value by former President Mwai Kibaki.Most of this money is used to fund our budget and expenditure but it ends up being embezzled by leaders and politicians who are still walking free in the country.We are going to look at the last nine finance ministers and how they have faired in plunging the country into this huge debt.
During Moi's era we are going to look into only two ministers.The first one is Chris Okemo who's tenure took 21 months.During his tenure,he was able to borrow Kshs 100.9 Billion from the foreign government.The second one is Christopher Okemo who served for 12 months.During his tenure he was able to borrow Kshs 23.2 billion only.
During Kibaki's era,they were five Finance ministers including Uhuru Kenyatta.The first one was Dvid Mwiraria who served for 38 months andwas able to borrow Kshs 112.7 billion.The second one was Amos Kimunya who served for 28 months and was able to borrow Kshs 117 billion.The third one was John Michuki who served for 6 months only and was able to borrow Kshs 111 billion.Uhuru Kenyatta is the other one and worked for 37 months and was able to borrow Kshs 529.2 billion.The last finance minister during Kibaki's era was Robinson Njeru Githae who worked for 16 months and was able to borrow Kshs 367 billion.
During Uhuru Kenyatta's leadership,the government has been able to borrow over Kshs 5 trillion with a very short time.Henry Rotich served for 74 months and was able to borrow over Kshs 4 trillion.The current Finance Cabinet Secretary has worked for 16 months and borrowed over Kshs 1.5 billion.
