Since being fired as Kenya Revenue Authority board chairperson in 2019, Dr Edward Sambili's hopes of making a comeback went up in smokes after being overlooked by President William Ruto in the latest government appointments.

Dr Sambili, a former Central Bank of Kenya Deputy Governor, was among the front runners for the CBK Governor position following the exit of Dr Patrick Njoroge. But as things would turn out, the President ended up picking one of his top economic advisors, Dr Kamau Thugge for the position.

Dr Thugge, had previously worked for International Monetary Fund before being picked as Treasury Principal Secretary. He was fired in 2019 amid corruption allegations over the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal.

But for Dr Sambili, one of the top economists in the country, it is bad luck again. Having been in the cold since 2019, the husband of former Mogotio MP and ex-cabinet minister, Prof. Hellen Sambili, should prepare for another five years in the cold.

Now in his 70s, it could be the end of an era for the former Planning Permanent Secretary.
