DP Ruto's support in the Kissi region is diminishing following the change of support from a section of leaders who have been backing him. The leaders have now thrown their support behind Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i should he run for the presidency. It is essential to note that Kissi region has been a battleground with leaders including the DP making in roads to consolidate support ahead of the general elections.
However, the Interior CS has not declared interest in running for the country's top job although he has been crowned as the Kissi community spokesperson.
Dr. Matiang'i is a loyal follower of President Kenyatta who has political difference with his DP. Further, Matiang'i has been seen as a compromise candidate with leaders including ODM party leader Raila Odinga claiming that he can easily support Matiang'i's candidature if he decides to vie for the presidency.
Kissi region is always considered a swing vote and crucial in the political arithmetics for the leading contenders. Therefore, the changing of support from former supporters imply that the DP will have to use a different strategy to gain considerable support in the region.
