President William Samoei Ruto has said there was aware that there was an attempt to Kidnap and Murder the outgoing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Wafula Chebukati at Bomas of Kenya during the tallying of the presidential votes during last year's election. The president said this in StateHouse, Nairobi during a meeting with constitutional commissions and independent institutions today. The president added that the Chair and the other commissioners were threatened and offered stupendous financial rewards in equal measures to subvert the will of the people and cooperate with the agents of impunity but they resisted.
During the meeting speaker after speaker, commended Chebukati and the two commissioners not forgetting the Chief Executive Officer of the Electoral Commission for remaining firm and their devotion to defending the Constitution of the Republic of Kenya during the last General election. The IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati and two commissioners are exiting the commission today after the expiry of their security of tenure.
The president also condemned the Cherera four who gave in to threats and intimidations.
