5 Kenyan Governors Who Built Houses And Offices That Could Rival King Solomon's Mansion (Opinion)

Samburu governor has been facing the wrath of Kenyans after photos of his official residence emerge. Some blame him for coming up with projects that does not benefit local residents.

In 2015, SRC stop governors from receiving house allowance and instead direct them to build official residences that would be financed by their respective county governments. The Senate had set ksh45 million as the highest amount any county can spend in building the residences.

Some governors spent more than what was set while others shelved the plans and instead use the money to finance development projects. Here are five governors who have built mansions for themselves.

1. Machakos county

Dr Alfred Mutua new seat of power looks like the US White House. The county government used ksh350 million to finance the largest governor's office in Kenya. It has conference facilities, the First Lady office and house governor's staff. Section of Kenyans congratulated him for building an iconic structure.

2. Samburu county

Samburu governor Lenolkulal built a mansion costing millions of shillings. According to EACC documents, about 168.68 million is feared to have been lost in inflated cost and fictitious procurement contracts. He is currently facing corruption charges.

3. Bomet county

Bomet county constructed a ksh60.65-million mansion for the governor. Another ksh27 million was used to construct a wall around the building. Governor's executive chair is worth a whooping ksh0.75 million while his mahogany table costs ksh0.8 million. Dr Hillary Barchok blamed the former governor Hon Isaac Rutto for inflating the cost.

4. Mandela county

Governor Ali Roba official residence sit on an expansive piece of land located at the outskirts of Mandera town. The county government has set aside millions of shillings to furnish the residence despite the myriad of problems facing the locals.

5. Turkana county

Governor Josphat Nanok built himself a massive residence that is bigger than the local county referral hospital. Many residents from Turkana county are facing water and food shortage while their governor is eating life with a big spoon.
