Mr. James Karugu passed on yesterday at his home in Kiambu, family confirmed the news to NTV. He was the second attorney general after independence. Mr. Karugu had taken over for Charles Njonjo, who had resigned to enter politics. Mr. Karugu, however, astonished the nation 15 months later when he abruptly resigned for unspecified reasons and returned to his Kiamara coffee estate on the outskirts of Kiambu town.
His biggest concern after being appointed AG was that corruption was infiltrating the judiciary. He chose a slogan that guided his life after leaving office: "I don't have to be corrupt, and I can earn money by farming."
On the morning after his resignation, he accompanied his wife and children to the farm in Kiambu to create a "honest life."
