President Ruto Now Claims There Was Direct Attempt To Abduct And Kill Chebukati

According to President William Ruto, during the elections in August 2022, there was a clear attempt to assassinate departing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati.

President Ruto mentioned that he is aware that some actors were interested in undermining the polls and threatened Chebukati to tamper with the presidential results during a meeting with constitutional commissions and independent institutions on Tuesday at State House in Nairobi.

He continued, "We know that there was a clear attempt to kidnap Wafula Chebukati and kill him to paralyze the commission or have a complaint commissioner take over and violate the people's sovereignty.

"It was a hard, chilly, and lonely time; the pressure was constant, the rewards lavish, and the dangers grave."

The Head of State continued by saying that he was aware that all of the electoral body's commissioners had also been threatened and even promised a lump sum of money provided they played along with the "system.

Ruto said, "We now know that Chebukati, commissioners Abdi Yakub Guliye, and Boya Molu, as well as CEO Hussein Marjan and their employees, were given astronomical financial prizes to cooperate with the agents of impunity, but they heroically rejected.

We also know that they were subsequently pressured into overturning Kenyans' decisions by threatening them with severe repercussions for themselves and their families.
