Meet Ex-County Police Commander Who Ended Up Becoming GSU Commandant

As the Commandant of one of the most dreaded security units in the country today, the GSU, Douglas Kanja is a very senior and powerful person in Kenya.

At the helm of the Ruaraka-based unit since his appointment in 2018 to succeed Stephen Chelimo who retired, Kanja was tipped to succeed former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett in 2019. But as fate would have it, Hillary Mutyambai was picked.

In 2022, after the exit of Mutyambai and as President William Ruto was set to name new police chief, Kanja was once again one of the front runners for the position. Once again, current Kenya Police Training College Commandant, Japheth Koome was chosen.

But with one of the positions for Deputy Inspector General of Police set to fall vacant when Edward Mbugua retires, Kanja is still being viewed as one of the front runners.

Boasting over 34 years of experience, Kanja served as Kilifi County Police Commander before his elevation to head the GSU by the former President, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Going forward, will Kanja shed the tag of being a front runner every time a senior position in the police service fall vacant?
