NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua's unveiling as a spokesperson for the Mount Kenya Leaders Forum is raising temperatures from both sides of the political divide.
Martha Wangari Karua.
Karua has a history of being steadfast and never compromising on issues that are dear to her. On 6th April 2009, she resigned on principle as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
As a member of Parliament for Gichugu Constituency, she was known to articulate her views on the floor of Parliament without recourse to whether she was stepping on the feet of the establishment. Her bold approach to issues has earned her equal respect among admirers and detractors alike.
When she teamed up with economist Dr. David Ndii and activist Boniface Mwangi in the Linda Katiba movement many wrote her off as having degenerated into peripheral political activism. But the triumph of the caucus as being the engine that stopped the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill (2020) was not lost on observers.
Linda Katiba initiative killed BBI.
Karua wields substantial clout with women voters, is erudite in her expositions, and is a stickler for the rule of law. By unveiling her as the Spokesperson for Mount Kenya, the region has found an astute, passionate, and well-informed negotiator for their interests.
However, for three people, Karua's entry into the political limelight of the region could also mean the end of their aspirations for high office.
Justin Muturi coronation was controversy-ridden.
National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi has coronated himself twice as the region's spokesperson but was written off as a joker. With the entry of Karua, the joke effectively perishes.
Kirinyagah Governor Ann Mumbi Waiguru had her sights set on a possible running mate slot with ODM party's Raila Amollo Odinga. Following the reconciliation between political heavyweights Andrew Ngirici and Dr. Karanja Kibicho her chances of retaining the governor's seat have significantly diminished. With the entry of Karua, who at one time indicated she might be vying for the Kirinyagah County gubernatorial seat, Waiguru's political future is in limbo.
Rigathi Gachagua's sell-ability to Ruto was based on the absence of a designated spokesperson in divided Central Kenya.
Another person affected by the recognition of Karua as the region's spokesperson is Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua. Gachagua's strong selling points were that he's a deputy President Dr. William Samoei Ruto confidant and could easily sway the region in the absence of a universally acclaimed spokesperson.
The 6 million vote-strong Mount Kenya region traditionally votes as a block. Each presidential candidate will now be out to woo the "Iron Lady", Martha Wangari Karua for a piece of that block.
