While appearing in court yesterday, 1 December 2021, Transport CAS Chris Obure told the court that he received a letter from Mudavadi on 9 May 2002, in which Mudavadi sought approval for direct procurement of equipment for the Postal Corporation of Kenya.

Hon Mudavadi was serving as the Vice President and Minister for Transport and Communication. Obure alleged that Mudavadi said that the government was intent on interconnecting postal offices across the country.

The sought equipment included computer servers, Vsat hardware and software licenses. This contract was then directly given to Spacenet Corporation, an American company.

Mr Obure, who was serving as finance minister at the time, said that he did not abuse his office powers by doing direct procurement but was under the impression that Mudavadi was telling the truth and the deal was also approved by Attorney General .

The deal, which saw the Kenyan government pay $11,700,000 for the said equipment, was one among 18 others which led to lose of billions, together known as the Anglo Leasing Scandal.
