Top 10 Poorest Counties In Kenya, See The Position Your County Lies

It was found that the 10 worst performing counties in the country in the 2022 Economic Survey report were primarily located in dry and semi-dry regions that rely on pastoralism for their primary economic activity.

According to the survey, "animal production is the dominant economic activity in these areas, while the contribution of gross value added from other sectors including cultivating crops, manufacturing, transportation, and real estate was small."

There was only a 4.6% contribution to Kenya's GDP from the poorest 10 counties.

Kenya's 10 poorest counties

(1) Isiolo

One of the devolved units that contributes less than 2% of GDP is the Eastern county (GDP).

During the study period, Isiolo added KSh 26 billion to the Gross County Product (GCP).

Gross county product (GCP) is the monetary worth of all the goods and services created within a certain county.

2. Samburu

Samburu is the second most populous ethnic group in Kenya.

The Rift Valley county, where corruption charges have shaken the administration, was found to be one of the poorest in the country.

KSh 29.2 billion (2021 Kenyan Shillings) was Samburu's total economic output.

3. The Tana River

The KNBS report estimates the coastal county's GDP at KSh 29.8 billion.

Over 80% of the labor force is employed in agriculture and livestock production in this county.

4. Lamu

With a GCP of KSh 32 billion, Lamu is the fourth poorest county in Kenya.

The county's economic impact on the nation is 0.3%.

5. Wajir

During the time frame in question, the GCP value of Wajir Wajir was KSh 49 billion. Beef sold in Nairobi and Mombasa is sometimes shipped in from this area.

An internal power struggle between Governor Mohamed Abdi and his Deputy, Ali Muktar, has made headlines in the county.

9. Tharaka Nithi

As the sole county on Mount Kenya, Tharaka Nithi is one of the least developed areas in the country.

10. Taita Taveta

Granton Samboja's coastline county is the tenth poorest in the country.
