Trans Nzoia gubernatorial candidate Chris Wakhungu Wamalwa has today received blessings of dozens of elders drawn from the Sabaot community inhabiting the areas around mount Elgon.
During the special occasion, the elders vowed to rally behind Wamalwa's candidature in the face-off against former Rift Valley regional coordinator George Natembeya.
Although Natembeya has no past history in elective politics, he is Chris Wamalwa's main challenger with an impressive popularity rating by recent opinion polls.
The two bigwigs in the gubernatorial race are also taking keen interest in the county's demographics which will play a pivotal role in determining the winner of the polls.
With both Wamalwa and Natembeya coming from the majority Bukusu sub-tribe of the Luhya community, the Kalenjin voting block will be very critical to each of them as they seek to succeed outgoing governor Patrick Khaemba.
In an attempt to secure the Kalenjin voting block, Natembeya unveiled Dr. Philemona Binea Kapkori as his deputy some time back.
Dr. Philomena Kaprori
Natembeya has also been a subject of debate lately after he made controversial remarks that were taken as discriminatory against the Kalenjin community. He however dismissed his critics arguing that he was misinterpreted and his competitors want to politicise the matter to gain political mileage.
