Early Life and Education

His Excellency the Governor of Nyamira County Nyagarama John Obiero, 74, was born in the remote Village of Nyakemincha, Nyamira County in 1946. His early life wasn’t a walk in the park just like most Kenyans but he didn’t curve in to the commands of it. He went to school to the famous Nyakemincha Primary school and later Kisii and Maseno High Schools for his A and O-Levels.  He then joined the University of Nairobi where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education majoring in English and Literature.

Career and Professional Journey

After his graduation, Nyagarama went to teach in Nduru boys’ high school and later in Menyenya high as a teacher of English. He served as a board’s director in Menyenya high and was a pioneering staff at Sironga Girls’ high school, Kebirigo and Kenyenya.

John abandoned his teaching career and dived into tea business a career that spanned for 31 years. His epitome role in the Kenya Tea Development Agency was when he became a board director in charge of Kisii and Nyamira farms. He later became a Managing director in Sotik Tea Factory. With his vast and robust experience he was selected as a chairperson for the Kenya Tea Packers Limited (KETEPA)

After the 31 years career span in tea, he diverged his interest in Politics where he fully commenced the journey in 2007. He run for the seat of the MP in his region, West Mugirango and lost but come 2013 he run for the newly introduced gubernatorial seat and won under the ODM ticket.  He won a re-run despite tough competition from opponents. He has served as the Governor till his death on 18^th December 2020.

Personal Life

He is married to Naomi Nyagarama with whom they are blessed with two children, the late Ndemo Nyagaram and Momanyi Nyagarama. Ndemo died on June 2020 after suffering from acute meningitis aged 44 years. He succumbed to the deadly virus Corona Virus that was declared a world pandemic at the beginning of the year.

He has been a long time business man and ventured into various sectors. His wealth is vast from assets and buildings in Nyamira and Kisii County. He is believed to have assets in the long distance transport busese, Guardian, Ena Coach and Transline. He also has owns a leading private school named Dorcas Memorial Boarding school and huge tea farms across the nation. He is a true investor and millionaire.
