Why Raila Odinga is Outsmarting DP Ruto in Mt Kenya

Raila Odinga is climbing the mountain steadily. Very few Kenyans had actually anticipated that ODM leader was going to be a factor in the Mt Kenya politics in 2022 but from all indicators, Raila Odinga is going to be a major factor. The question which most Kenyans are currently asking is why Raila Odinga is outwitting DP Ruto in the larger Mt Kenya region.

Despite DP Ruto making it clear that he is the gateway to the Mt Kenya region, Raila is defying the odds and seems to be making inroads in Central Kenya. He has been pulling shocking crowds especially yesterday in his rally at Nyahururu. In my honest opinion, there are two main reason why Raila is beating DP Ruto in Mt Kenya.

1. The Underdog Factor

Raila Odinga ventured into Mt Kenya as an underdog. No one believed that he would succeed. However, with endorsement from President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila has been able to reverse Central Kenya attracting huge crowds while at it.

Raila had nothing to lose by courting the Mt Kenya region, unlike DP Ruto who is likely to be punished by losing support.

2. DP Ruto Branded Raila as an Enemy of the people

Ruto has called Raila Odings names and people from Central Kenya have lived under the impression that Raila is a bad man. DP Ruto's messaging was wrong from the start. Now that people are able to attend Raila Odinga's meetings and rallies, they are able to listen to his message and judge for themselves whether Raila is a good or a bad person. They have realised that Raila was not the person that was branded as a bad person or an enemy of the Mt Kenya region.

Raila Odinga has succeeded in changing the views of the youth who form a huge chunk of the electorate.

In my view, Raila Odinga will continue outmanoeuvring DP Ruto in the larger Mt Kenya region until the latter changes his strategy.
