Rigathi Gachagua, a Kenya Kwanza presidential running mate, admitted on Tuesday that his appointment by coalition presidential candidate William Ruto had divided Mt Kenya elders.
"I had led these individuals for four years and we were fine... when this position became available, we disagreed," he stated.
Mr Gachagua told Inooro FM that they were like brothers and sisters "until, as is customary in families when a favor is on the line, the opportunity to chose a running mate presented itself."
He compared choosing a running buddy to choosing a spouse.
"It is a personal decision by the presidential aspirant... desired is someone well recognized, compatible, who shares the same beliefs, with proven worth for friendship," he stated.
Mr Gachagua stated that the procedure strained his relationship with Mt Kenya leaders, who appeared to favor Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, who received 24 votes out of the 30 present.
Prof Kindiki indicated that he was the clear favorite to win the position after receiving widespread support from Mt Kenya authorities.
"But I want to be clear that I am [satisfied] with the conclusion... because when other ideals for a running mate were tabled and defined by our presidential aspirant, I recognized the sense of Mr Gachagua being chosen," he told Citizen TV on May 18.
"They have recognized me as their deputy team leader and the ultimate Mt Kenya team captain," Mr Gachagua said, adding that he is currently busy uniting the leaders.
