Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati, commisioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, are today ending their tenure at the Electoral body having served upto the maximum period as per the constitution.
The Commisioners leave the Commission in unstable condition considering that the only one remaining at the commission is Irine Masit who is also being probed over her conduct in the August 2022 general elections after together with three others; Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi differed with the results announced by the chairman.
Apart from the commisioners, the other one who might quit her position is the deputy Chief executive officer Ruth Kulundu. According to Minority Leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati allegedly plans to fire the deputy Chief executive officer before Exiting the office.
The Ugunja constituency member of Parliament claimed that the outgoing chairman wants to fire Kulundu despite the court order that took her back to the office. He however warned that the impunity being shown in the country will just come to an end one day.
"I understand @WChebukati and team plan to fire Deputy @IEBCKenya CEO Ruth Kulundu on their last day in office against express court orders. This kind of impunity will have to end one day" the Ugunja lawmaker posted on his official social media pages.
Azimio has been fighting for Kulundu since the August 2022 general elections. In September last year, a section of the coalition's MPs held demonstrations demanding that Kulundu returns to duty claimiming that it was witch-hunt. This was after she was allegedly interdicted by Chebukati.
