The political rivalry pitting Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Kilome MP John Harun Mwau played out openly during the 2002 KANU elections at Kasarani gymnasium.

As one of the senior most members of the ruling party KANU at the time, Kalonzo was vying for the powerful vice chairman position to represent Eastern Province.

With Uhuru Kenyatta, Noah Katana Ngala and Musalia Mudavadi having easily been elected to represent their respective provinces, Kalonzo faced a scare.

The battle for the Eastern Province slot ended up as a political duel pitting Kalonzo, a KANU insider and Mwau, a powerful tycoon.

Kalonzo would finally manage to survive Harun Mwau scare to clinch the position.

The events of 2002 would define the relationship between Kalonzo and Mwau for many years to come.

With all politics being local, the battle for Ukambani ended up becoming a personal political rivalry between the two heavyweights.

A one-time close friend of ODM leader Raila Odinga, Mwau make his entry into politics in 1992 when he contested for President but his performance was dismal.

He would later serve as the first chairman for the Kenya Anti- Corruption Commission before being hounded out of office by Parliament.

He was elected as Kilome MP in 2002 and defended his seat in 2007.

In the Grand Coalition Government between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mwai served as assistant minister.

During the 2013 general election, Mwau contested the Makueni Senator position but lost to Mutula Kilonzo, a key ally of Kalonzo.

In the by-election following Mutula's death, he once again lost, losing to Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

He never presented himself for any political seat during the 2017 general election.

Today, Mwau who is touted as one of the richest people in Kenya, has maintained an uncharacteristic low political profile, leaving many guessing on his game plan.

Is the man who gave Kalonzo hard time in Ukambani politics at the end of his political career?

At 73 years, Mwau is not yet done. But his silence could mean that he is considering his future in politics.
