ANC Appoints A New Party Leader As Mudavadi Begins His Tenure As Prime Cabinet Secretary

Issa Timamy, the governor of Lamu, has been elected to lead the Amani National Congress (ANC).

Musalia Mudavadi, the leader of the ANC party, resigned after being chosen to be a prime cabinet secretary in William Ruto's cabinet.

On Thursday, October 27th, the ANC party issued a statement declaring that Issa Timamy would succeed Mudavadi as party leader.

H.E Musalia Mudavadi relinquished his position as ANC Party Leader following his nomination as the Prime CS,”

“The ANC Party wishes H.E Mudavadi God’s blessing in his service as Prime Cabinet Secretary and heartily welcomes Gov. Issa Timamy into his new role as Party Leader.” The statement read.

The resignation of Mudavadi is in conformity with Article 77, Section 2 of the Constitution, which bars appointed public officials from holding positions in political parties.

"A full-time State officer shall not participate in any other gainful employment. Any appointed State officer shall not hold office in a political party,” reads Article 77 (1, 2) of the Constitution.

During the 2022 election cycle, Mudavadi sided with President William Ruto, and the ANC party partnered with the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.

The list of politicians who have resigned after being appointed now includes Mudavadi. On Wednesday, October 26, Kipchumba Murkomen, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Roads, resigned from his position as a senator for Elgeyo Marakwet after ten years in the position.

In addition to Soipan Tuya and Alice Wahome, the Member of Parliament for Kandara and the Representative for Garissa Township, Aden Duale resigned in accordance with the constitution.

Moses Kuria, a former member of parliament for Gatundu South, has disbanded his Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) ahead of his appointment as Trade Cabinet Secretary today.
