On Tuesday, when campaigning on the Coast, Vice President William Ruto acknowledged that the contested land in Taita Taveta County is his. According to Dr. Ruto, former Taveta member of parliament Basil Criticos gave him the expansive farm. Ruto claims that Criticos gave him the land to assist him in repaying an Agricultural Finance Corporation debt.

"Yes, the land was handed to me by the former Taveta Member of Parliament, Basil Criticos, who had a loan from the Agricultural Finance Corporation, and I assisted him in paying it back. The land was handed to me as a token of appreciation by the representative, "Ruto remarked."

Land ownership has always generated debate whenever the subject of land is brought up. The DP's admission of land ownership is viewed as an attempt to win votes in the August 9 elections. Land problems on the coast have been a campaign tool for many years, and all the presidential contenders are using them to sway voters in their favor.

Ruto presently uses the tract of land to raise livestock and grow corn. According to a story in the Daily Nation, the farm has caused residents to go without water by diverting water intended for them.
