The gubernatorial seat is seen as the most lucrative political post after the presidency and the office of the deputy president. Among the vocal retiring governors include; Prof Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Ali Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Zacharia Okoth Obado (Migori) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega). These governors are not only known for their role in politics but also for always performing well when it comes to development projects within their counties. For instance, Maendeleo Chap Chap leader,Mutua,Prof Kibwana and Hon Oparanya are always in top three when it comes to ranking based on the performance level.
These governors have some form of influence regarding who will succeed them. Their parties or party leaders are also keen to retain those gubernatorial seats. This makes the race to succeed to almost be a national issue though it is just a county position. The race to succeed Kakamega Governor and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya is already on. Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who is a member of the Amani National Congress (ANC) is leading the race and is considered favorites to winning the elections. Senator Malala rose from being a Member of County Assembly (MCA) straight to the senatorial position after the then senator Boni Khalwale went for the gubernatorial seat.
Today, the senator has confidently admitted that he will win the gubernatorial seat easily in the next elections. He says that his opponents are weak and can neither beat him nor be compared to him. "All my gubernatorial opponents in Kakamega County are lightweight and easy to topple over in the run up to the 2022 elections," Malala said.
