If the Supreme Court affirms Deputy President William Ruto's victory on Monday, ODM leader Raila Odinga will be left with no choice but to resign from active politics, expert Fred Sasia has predicted.
On August 15, Ruto was declared the winner of the presidential election. Raila, who was running through the Azimio La Umoja coalition, rejected this announcement and then petitioned the Supreme Court to have it overturned.
According to the pundit, the decision made on Monday will have a huge impact on whether the former prime minister can continue to compete or must step down.
He told The Star that if the seven justices maintain the IEBC's announcement, Raila, a long-serving political leader, will be compelled to shift his attention elsewhere because he has no other choice given his elderly age.
The publication quoted him as saying, "An end the enigma [Raila has been referred to as "the enigma"] would never like to have, but one that he has no control over."
On the other hand, he believes that an annulment will give Raila another opportunity to urge Kenyans to elect him and another chance to dream.
If the court strikes down the IEBC declaration, it will be a gift. He would be able to dream once more because of this. He will have one more opportunity to convince Kenyans of his motivations, the argument goes.
Raila claims that the election was rigged against him, and the main goal of his petition is to persuade the judges of this. It claims that Ruto collaborated with IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati to steal his victory and give it to the DP.
This was his fifth attempt to win the top spot, and the result was his fifth loss. He has attributed vote fraud and election rigging to four of the five defeats.
