ODM MP Cries Foul As His Constituents Living With HIV Risk Losing Their Lives Due To ARVs Shortage

Homabay town member of parliament, Hon. Peter Opondo Kaluma has demanded the government to stop playing with lives and get the ARVs to reach the people of Homabay county living with HIV, Opondo's statement comes at a time the drugs are reportedly stuck at the port of Mombasa over Sh90 million tax stand-off between Kenya and a US importer of ARVs, USAID.

Currently, Kenya is experiencing an acute shortage of Antiretroviral drugs which has hit public hospitals, greatly affecting people living with HIV/Aids. This has attracted the attention of political leaders hailing from Homabay and Nyanza region considering that the region has been the most affected.

The drugs have been saving lives which otherwise would have been forgotten, in this regard, the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya too had called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to urgently instruct the foreign affairs, health and finance ministries to solve the diplomatic matter between Kenya and USAID.

The government should atleast consider saving these many lives, therefore, it is very important they move with speed to procure these drugs.
