If the Supreme Court upholds Deputy President William Ruto's victory, President Uhuru Kenyatta will be among the biggest losers, according to political commentator Fred Sasia. On August 15, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that Ruto had won the election as president, drawing criticism from Raila Odinga's supporters who saw apparent cheating. After publicly endorsing Raila, Sasia claims that Uhuru would do better if the former prime minister won since a different outcome would make him appear bad.
He claims that Ruto's ascension to the king will also disgrace Uhuru because Uhuru had previously called Ruto a poor candidate and someone who shouldn't be permitted near positions of authority.
He said to The Star that doing so would also deprive Uhuru of the advisor role Raila had committed to keep for him.
The analyst continues by saying that if the court overturns Ruto's victory, he must triumph in the rematch in order to avoid becoming the first Kenyan to lose after having his victory overturned.
He will be the first candidate to run for president who didn't win the State House if the court declares the election invalid and he loses the rematch. Making history like that would be dreadful, he is quoted as saying.
He claims that as proof of his victory, Ruto will make history by being the first Kenyan to be elected to the coveted position on first try.
Through his attorneys, Ruto attempted to persuade the Supreme Court judges that his victory was legitimate, dismissing Raila's claims as those of a bitter loser unable to accept his defeat. On the other hand, Raila's legal representatives claimed that his votes had been stolen, going so far as to offer evidence that the IEBC servers had been compromised.
