Since being chosen as President Uhuru Kenyatta's running mate in 2013, Dr. Ruto has held the position of deputy president of Kenya. He served as President in Mr. Kenyatta's absence from office in October 2014 while he attended to his criminal case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands.Later, Mr. Kenyatta's charges were dropped.

He was identified in 2011 as one of the six people who organized and funded the post-election violence in 2007 and 2008, which resulted in 1,200 fatalities and numerous displacements due to a contested presidential election. During the unrest that followed the 2007 elections, Dr. Ruto was charged alongside journalist Joshua Arap Sang with crimes against humanity (murder, deportation or forcible transfer of population, and persecution). The trial for Mr. Sang and Dr. Ruto began on September 10, 2013.

He had previously met Mr. Moi through his participation in church activities, who served as his political mentor.

As the MP for Eldoret North, he was first chosen to serve in parliament in 1997. From 1998 to 2002, Dr. Ruto worked as an assistant minister in the President's Office before being promoted to cabinet and appointed Minister for Home Affairs as a result of Mr. Moi's dismissal of George Saitoti due to differences over the 2002 succession. Dr. Ruto has also held the positions of minister of higher education and agriculture. In 2005 and 2010, Dr. Ruto voted against the new Constitution referendum.

He focused on the 2022 presidential election, which he successfully won on a UDA ticket through the Kenya Kwanza Alliance to become the country of Kenya's fifth president.
