Handshake Suffers a New Blow After ODM Legislators Oppose Ms. Fatuma Chege's Nomination as PS

Ms. Fatuma Chege's nomination as the Principal Secretary (PS) for the newly-created department in the Education Ministry, recently received opposition from assembly members allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Ms. Chege had been proposed by President Kenyatta for the post of PS in the Department for the Implementation of Curriculum Reforms.

However, the ODM legislators turned down her nomination citing that it will bloat the already ballooning wage bill. The opposition becomes the very first since the March 2018 Handshake between Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

However, the assembly managed to approve Dr. Jamleck Muturi John and Mr. Timon Oyucho as chairman and member of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) respectively.

It's worth noting, that the lawmakers may have had purposed to ensure that Ms. Chege's nomination fails since the ministry already has about five PSs.

It took the intervention of Majority Leader Amos Kimunya to petition Speaker Justin Muturi to postpone Ms. Chege's approval motion.

Although some MPs were categorical that they will not approve her nomination even if it's tabled again before the house. MP John Badi further slammed the nomination committee for not taming some of the unnecessary nominations.
