Why Kitui Should Be Declared Legal Minds Powerhouse

Kitili Mwendwa served between 1968 to 1971 as the first African Chief Justice before he was allegedly linked to the 1971 coup attempt against Jomo Kenyatta. Mwendwa had become the first indigenous Chief Justice replacing the former Mzungu after independence. He was only 39 when he was appointed to this position. He, together with Chief of Defence Staff, Maj-Gen Ndolo, would be implicated in a coup plot by Yatta MP Gideon Mutiso, but Mzee Kenyatta allowed them to only step down from their positions without facing any trial. Mwendwa died in a car crash in September 1985.

Another very powerful figure from Kitui is former chief justice Dr Willy Mutunga who was a famous legal figure in Kenya. Willy Munyoki Mutunga is a Kenyan lawyer, intellectual, reform activist, and was the Commonwealth Special Envoy to the Maldives. He is also an active member of the Justice Leadership Group. He is the retired Chief Justice of Kenya and President of the Supreme Court.

Third on the list is Kalonzo musyoka. He is a distinguished lawyer on constitutional matters. He was born on 24th December 1953 in Mwingi, Kitui County. He is a Kenyan politician who was the tenth vice president from 2008 to 2013. He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2007 presidential election, after which he was appointed as Vice President by Kibaki in January 2008. He was Currently mentioned to be in the list of those to be awarded the prestigious Senior counsel by JSC to uhuru Kenyatta.

Last on the list is the late Nzamba Kitonga. He is considered one of the greatest constitutional lawyers to have ever lived in Kenya. He was the chair of the committee of experts that drafted the new constitution of Kenya. He was born in Kitui, and held positions such as president of of East African and  Law Society and also served as a judge of the COMESA Court of Justice.
