The 2022 Presidential race has already gained steam and it is pitting Deputy President William Ruto against Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Despite there being two other Presidential contestants, Raila and Ruto are the main contenders.
Adequate media coverage is really important during campaigns. It gives the candidates enough publicity to market one's agenda for Kenyans and solicit support. Having more media coverage also gives one the picture of a strong candidate.
In the case of the 2022 Presidential race, a report by the Media Council of Kenya shows that Azimio One Kenya Presidential flag bearer had more media coverage than Kenya Kwanza's William Ruto. Raila Odinga had 61.2% of the media coverage while William Ruto had 38%.
This is inspite of the fact that both Presidential candidates have almost the same popularity making it hard to give a clear winner. This is a worrying trend. Media should be open and fair in their coverage to all contestants to maintain public trust in our media houses.
