Vocal ODM MPs Clamour for Change on Varsity Elections System

University comrades will soon elect their leaders through universal suffrage.

College elections are likely to change radically after members of Parliament backed amendments of the Universities Act.

If the law is amended, university students will choose their leaders through popular vote and the delegates system which is currently in use will be abolished.

During a departmental committee on education and research, nominated MP Wilson Sossion said the current system tampers with democracy according to the People Daily.

"Universities are nurseries of leaders who must explore democratic ideas. It was very unconstitutional for his amendment to take away universal suffrage."

The vocal nominated legislator called for the adoption of universal suffrage that seeks to allow democracy among students.

The petition was submitted by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino seeks to turn the power to elect leaders to the students and not a select few. He attributed his current leadership to his days as Sonu Chairman at the University of Nairobi.

Migori Women Representative Pamela Odhiambo acknowledges that while she was in university, they adopted elections by popular vote.
