COTU Secretary General has cleared the air on a photo shared online for the better part of Friday. The long-serving labour union boss is seen in an airport holding onto a suitcase.
In response, Atwoli said that the image was shot in Kuala Lumpur more than 5 years ago. "Somebody using my old photo while arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, five years ago. Shenzi sana!" wrote Atwoli on Twitter.
His detractors shared the photo widely while claiming that Atwoli, hitherto opposed to a Ruto presidency, was already leaving the country in anticipation of a Ruto win.
Several Kenyans reacted to Atwoli's clarification, some informing the Azimio la Umoja affiliated politician that it was just a joke and that they only wanted his attention.
ODM Communications Director Philip Etale, perhaps miffed at the post, blamed their political enemies for the post. "Only mad people would post fake news such as this," he wrote in reply to the post.
