Murang’a Governor H.E. Mwangi Wa Iria has been battling graft cases since last year. The outspoken Governor was accused by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) for irregularly awarding tenders that led to a loss of Sh542 million. County Government funds.

In a verdict delivered today, the high court has decided to freeze two properties linked to Gov. Wa Iria. EACC suspects that the misappropriated funds were used to acquire the two prime properties.

The orders were given by Justice Maina Esther which required the two properties including a parcel of land in Umoja Innercore, Nairobi County, and another 13-acre piece of land in Nyeri County.

The orders by Justice Maina await the determination of an appeal for the two frozen properties to be surrendered to the National Government.

According to EACC, their investigations on the Murang’a Governor involved allegations of corruption, conflict of interest, and breach of general procurement laws during procurement processes in the County.

Gov. Wa Iria is said to have used his office powers as Governor to allocate tenders to a company owned by his relatives and close allies.

In his defense, however, the Governor claimed that he is not responsible for procurement services in the County office and the investigations should have been directed to the County Government’s procurement unit.
