Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, bolted from Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition on Monday, May 16,he went a head as he announced his presidential bid on the same day, picking Andrew Sunkuli as his running mate. Prior to leaving Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition and announcing his candidature, Mr Kalonzo had threatened to walk out if Raila Odninga failed to choose him as his running mate.
The big blow in his presidential quest has come out when Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) under Ann Nderitu has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) under Wafula Chebukati not to clear the former Vice President to run for the presidency on a Wiper party ticket in August 9th General elections, this is because Wiper is still under Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition.
Ann Nderitu, through her written letter to IEBC stated that Kalonzo’s Wiper had not left the Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition, hence cannot front a candidate in the August 9 polls. According to the Azimio pact, Mr Musyoka agreed not to withdraw from the coalition six months to the General Election or three months after the election.
His team had sought ORPP's advice on whether he could still run for the presidency while still being legally bound by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party pact.
It is believed that Kalonzo, exploring possible loopholes in the Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition agreement with an aim of frustrating the coalition after Raila Odinga settled on Martha Wangari Karua, as his running mate instead of him and yet he has worked with him in the last 2 elections. Now Mr Musyoka is seeking ORPP's advice on whether he can still run for the presidency while is still legally bound by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party pact.
However, Kalonzo had kept his options open with insiders within Azimio saying that Former Vice President is willing to rejoin the coalition if his conditions are met. Kalonzo, wants the role he was promised to be signed on paper, with an additional incentive of a 30% government positions.
